Is Community Engagement Essential to an Arts Organization?

October 17, 2011 § Leave a comment

…Or is excellence not enough in itself?

In a recent artsjournalblogs posting, Doug Borwick brought to life this question that many arts organizations, it seems, have been asking. Apparently some arts organizations do not believe that community engagement is a significant part of their mission-instead they believe that excellence in itself is their mission.

WHAT?

I can’t believe that any non-profit arts organization would ever consider excellence in itself to be their mission. Part of their very existence is to engage, support, and nurture their community. Excellence should be a part of their raison d’etre, and enhance their mission.

I’m not only stunned by this, but also slightly embarassed that any arts organization would consider only excellence in itself their mission.

Fortunately, Borwick also agrees with me in his post, which you can check out by clicking here.
